Music 101: Introduction to Western Art Music
Course Description:
This course is a study of music literature with an emphasis on listening and analytical tools. I include a brief survey of the history of Western music, and some of its representative compositions, from the medieval period to the twentieth century. The primary course objectives include developing the following:
Basic music vocabulary
Skills/strategies for listening to music
Familiarity with some of the repertory of Western Art Music
Recognition of important stylistic characteristics of music written in different historical periods by leading composers
An understanding of composers and their compositions in historical, social, political, intellectual, and cultural context.
