Music 101: Introduction to Western Art Music

Course Description:

This course is a study of music literature with an emphasis on listening and analytical tools. I include a brief survey of the history of Western music, and some of its representative compositions, from the medieval period to the twentieth century. The primary course objectives include developing the following: 

  •  Basic music vocabulary

  • Skills/strategies for listening to music

  • Familiarity with some of the repertory of Western Art Music

  • Recognition of important stylistic characteristics of music written in different historical periods by leading composers

  • An understanding of composers and their compositions in historical, social, political, intellectual, and cultural context.
